Botany About the Department Our Botany department is 34 years old as it was established in 1982. Late Prof. Bhanumurty was the HOD since then till 1996 ,and he was succeeded by Mrs. Surekha Sarangdhar till 2009 and on her retirement Dr.K Sankaran Potty took over as HOD. Currently the department is looked after by 5 permanent and 3 contractual teaching members, two lab assistants , one field collector and 8 lab attendants. The department has three laboratories catering junior and senior undergraduate students and junior and senior post graduate students. The department is equipped with excellent electrical and electronic equipments, microscopes, Digital projector, electronic microscope, computer and printer. There are about 200 dry specimens of plant ranging from Algae to Angiosperms. We have excellent collection of permanent slides of specimens as prescribed in the curriculum. The department also is in possession of fossil slides and fossil specimen of excellent plants. About the Subject The subject is dealing with microorganisms to macro-organisms. In the lower group of category, Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes and Pteridophytes are included along with Bacteria and Viruses. In higher group, the different branches of Botany such as Morpholology, Anatomy, Embryology, palynology, plant physiology, Pharmacognocy, cytogenetics etc. at the F.Y.B.Sc, S.Y.B.Sc, T.Y.B.Sc and M.Sc level are taught. At T.Y.BSc level as Applied component, Horticulture and Gardening is included. In every semester there are two papers of both theory and practical at F.Y.BSc level ,three papers of theory and practicals at S.Y.BSc level and four papers of theory and practical at T.Y.B.Sc level along with one paper of theory and practical each for Applied component Horticulture and Gardening. At the post Graduate level at every semester there are four papers each for theory and practical. Learning of this subject is very interesting as we are mixing with the nature. This subject provides many job potentials in the field of Agriculture, Pharmaceuticals, Horticulture, Forestry, Teaching and Research fields. Entrepreneurs can try out in Nurser y management, landscaping, Garden maintenance, and floriculture. At M.Sc level we have Taxonomy of Angiosperms as special subject. There are four papers in thory and practicals every year in the two year duration of the course.
