About the Department

  • Department was established in 1959 when college started

  • Active research in the field of synthetic organic chemistry has been carried out under the firm guidance of Dr. K.S. Nargund, Scientist of International repute. His work was ably carried forward by Dr. Ghalsasi, Dr. J. A. Parwate, Dr. V. S. Bhagwat, and others

  • Department has the honor to organize successfully 22nd and 27th Research Scholars Meet in the years 2010 and 2015 respectively jointly with Indian Chemical Society, Mumbai Branch

  • One day seminar on Basics, Peaceful uses and Safety aspects of Atomic Energy was organized on 11/12/2013  in association with Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India

  • From 2009, every year Department organizes lectures by eminent past students of the college, holding high positions in industry and Academics, for the benefit of present students

  • Some staff members are involved in active research, pursuing their Ph. D. degree.

About the Subject

Chemistry as a subject has immense scope in the academic field, research, and also in industry. Industries based on chemistry or requiring applications of chemistry outnumber other industries. Research in the field of chemistry is going on not only in institutions but also in industries. Because of this, students get attracted to this subject are always much more than to any other science subject.

For a chemist, everything around us- what we sense by our sense organs is a chemical. What we see is chemistry; even why and how we see is also chemistry. When a photon of light enters our eyes, a chemical reaction takes place inside. What we drink, what we eat are all chemicals for a chemist. Reactions taking place inside plant and animal bodies are of interest to a chemist. So the world around us far and near is chemistry-based.

Our country is striving hard to improve infrastructure, which rests on the shoulders of steel and cement. Both these are inorganic chemistry-based industries. As long as living beings are on earth, medicines will be required. The pharmaceutical industry provides medicines that are chemicals. The paint industry makes things attractive. Just see the world around,  near and far, living and nonliving may be soil or grass; water or distant planet or star- chemistry finds applications everywhere. The list is just unending.
