About Department
The department was established in 1959. The department runs an undergraduate program in Physics. For all these years members of the department have contributed significantly to the overall development of the college. Apart from their successful educational contributions some of the former members merit separate mention due to their significant achievements. Former Head of the department Shri G.B.Mulay founded college credit society. Shri S.A.Athalye has been Vice-Principal of the college and Shri P. H. Raut has been Vice-Principal of junior college. Shri J.B.Karnik was NCC officer of the long-standing and Chairman Gymkhana Committee and Chairman, Examination Committee. Dr. S.V.Panse was Principal of the college and later Director, Board of College and University Development, University of Mumbai. Currently, Dr. Panse is an adjunct professor of the department and a recognized Ph.D. guide in Physics. Dr. Y.V. Gulwadi has been the former Head of the department.
In 2006 department got permission to start a Ph.D. course in Physics with Dr. S.V.Panse as the recognized guide. Since then following members of staff have been awarded Ph. D. in Physics- Dr. Y.V. Gulwadi and Dr. S.P.Patil. Both of them had topics related to conducting polymers. Additionally, Dr. V.S.Athalye and Dr.G.G.Padhye were awarded Ph.D. prior to that. Dr. Athalye had an interest in theoretical physics whereas Dr. Padhye had an interest in conducting polymers. Currently, Shri D.M.Nerkar is pursuing his research in the same subject. In addition, Dr. Madhav Rajwade has an interest in students' knowledge organization in physics.
Currently, the department consists of four associate professors and four assistant professors with Dr. M.R.Rajwade as current Head of the department. He is also the Principal of the college.
About the Subject
Physics is one of the oldest natural sciences with astronomy being its earliest component. The aim of this branch of science is to understand fundamental laws which govern this universe. The eternal quest of man towards this goal constitutes a buildup of knowledge in this field.
The undergraduate physics course of the University of Mumbai covers all essential subtopics of physics for e.g. Mechanics, Heat- Thermodynamics, Electricity, Optics, Modern physics, Atomic-Molecular-Nuclear Physics, Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Cosmology, Mathematical methods in Physics, etc. The list of topics mentioned here is only illustrative, not exhaustive. The complete subject titles can be found under the tab courses. The course presumes sufficient proficiency in algebra and calculus.
The course has a good practical component with skills of observation, calculation, accuracy aptly tested.
The course prepares a good base for the Masters in Physics of any University. If completed successfully one can appear for M.Sc.entrance examinations.
